Number Four: Sell Yourself! Your resume is your personal advertisement and yet it's amazing how many people fail to treat it this way. Think about how an ad copy professional would write your resume if it were their job to sell you to a hiring manager. Instead of listing your previous job title as, "Account Representative," they might write "Outstanding Account Representative who prides himself on providing detailed customer service and timely responses for a complete customer experience." See the difference?
They are confounded about how to showcase their skills on their resumes. I cannot tell you how many people have said to me: "Well, I stayed home to raise my family." As if this is any small feat. Raising a family is hard work. You've heard the quote, "It takes a village to raise a child." Right, because if raising them was so easy, we would all have a really cool formula for doing so. To my knowledge, no such formula exists. My three are all completely different.
But you not only know what it took to perform your tasks at your previous jobs, you also know your particular industry better than a resume writer whose industry is . . . well, resume writing.
